About the event
This lecture explores the dynamic world of theatrical combat with a focus on rapier and dagger- one of the most iconic and elegant styles of stage fighting in the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras. Far from being mere spectacle, fight choreography in Shakespeare’s plays serves as a vital extension of character, theme, and narrative.
Through historical context and performance analysis and practical demonstrations, we’ll uncover how stage combat brings emotional truth to Shakespeare’s plays.
We’ll also address the importance of safety, storytelling and historical accuracy and why rigorous fight direction remains essential in modern productions.
